Taxpayers Win, Schools Lose - In the now more than 10 years
since Proposal A was adopted by voters, Michigan property taxpayers
are paying less, but most school districts are also getting less in
revenues than they might have had if schools in the state were still
primarily paid for through property taxes, concludes an analysis of
the school financing system by the Senate Fiscal Agency.

While property taxes have fallen, benefits to schools debated -
Genesee County - When Patrick and Patricia Major moved to Goodrich in
1994, they found a middle school and high school crammed into one
building, and a rural elementary school far more modest than anything
in the upscale Oakland County suburb they left.

Stabenow, Engler Slated to
Appear at Proposal 'A' Forum - Former Governor John Engler and
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) have both agreed to speak at a
day-long forum on the history and effects of the Proposal A school
financing system to be held on the 10th anniversary of the proposal's
electoral victory.

Proposal A is OK - In response to rising
criticism in the education community, former Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus said today
that he doesn't believe the promise of Proposal A is being broken if the
governor and the Legislature end up cutting the $6,700-per-student foundation
