TEMPERANCE - For
the past 51 years, I have been a public school educator. The
past eight years I served as a member of the Michigan State
Board of Education, most recently as its vice president. I took
on the role as a state board member not for political gain, but
for my love of public education.
For this reason, I have been shocked and dismayed as I have
reviewed the recent happenings between Gov. Jennifer Granholm
and State Superintendent Tom Watkins. I campaigned for and
supported Gov. Granholm and I had the privilege to be on the
board that voted to hire Tom Watkins. He has fulfilled my
expectations and that of many of my other board members with his
capability, vision and dedication to public education. This was
reflected in his last evaluation, just a few months ago, when he
was given an A- on his evaluation.
All of the current board members but one participated in that
evaluation. This was done because he was fulfilling the goals
set by the board of education, on which the governor is
represented.
It is obvious that Gov. Granholm must have been severely misled
and possibly provided inaccurate counsel about Tom by some
members of her staff or possibly a member or two of the state
board who have other agendas. I urge Gov. Granholm to review
feedback provided on Tom as some of her comments don't reflect
the individual serving in the state superintendent's role.
I urge Jennifer and Tom to get together, face to face, and
resolve their differences and issues. Forget the politics and do
what's best for public school education and the children of
Michigan.
